Adventure
Adventure is an exploration-driven game created by Team Opal, focusing on the joy of maneuvering through diverse levels. While each level maintained its own distinct theme, an overarching narrative of ascending and descending through mountainous terrain emerged. My contribution to the project involved crafting the front end of the game, inspired by the Pacific Northwest, featuring cave systems, waterfalls, and mountain vistas.
Adventure's focus was to practice integrating a level into a larger game. I focused on creating a seamless flow between levels, using my cave system as a natural transition. The goal was to maintain immersion, and I’m pleased with how the flow enhances the player’s experience.
I enjoyed diving deep into Unreal Engine's landscaping tools over the course of this project and feel I successfully brought my envisioned environment to life. This experience highlighted how environment art can enrich intentional game design, and I’m eager to explore this further in future projects.
The success of my level hinged on strong planning, guided by a detailed mood board. By adhering closely to this vision, I was able to create a believable and immersive space, balancing creative liberties with realistic structures.
This project required close collaboration, as my work directly impacted that of my team members. I focused on being a resource and a team builder, appreciating the exchange of ideas and the collective effort that drove our success.
Lighting proved to be a complex challenge, particularly in balancing interior cave systems with outdoor spaces. While I achieved some good results, this area remains a focus for future refinement.
Gaining proficiency in revision control and the migration process was a significant learning curve. Though there were challenges, such as version control mishaps, these experiences have strengthened my ability to contribute effectively in team environments.
Reflecting on the project, I see opportunities to enhance player interaction and further refine certain areas of the level. Additional narrative elements and strategically placed assets could elevate the overall experience.
Adventure was a pivotal experience in my journey as a game designer. The lessons learned from this project will undoubtedly influence my future work, driving me to refine my skills and deepen my understanding of game design.
